Hunted Leaf River WMA hard Mon,Tues,Wed 1/6-1/8 and saw nothing but ICE. Saw a few small scrapes and rubs, but nothing moving. Going back all week starting Monday. Rut should be starting soon.
With a friend of mine (Steven Rogers) watching super bowl when he got a call about a hunter who shot himself. Steven is a volunteer with the Janice Fire Dept. Apparently a hunter was lowering a 50 cal muzzeloader, but forgot to take out primer when it went off striking him in upper arm. The bullet also struck the cable on deer stand taking it out too. I know they finally got him down, but not sure if he survived. Just wandering if anybody out there new him and how he's doing. Steven said there were multiple agencies at the scene, its great to know we have people around when you get in trouble. I hunt alone frequently and realize how bad something can turn out. Great job to all involved.
Killed a doe last week in Leaf RIver WMA. All four hoofs were sloughing and she looked very poor. No fat on the meat when we cleaned her. Her hair was thinning also. My first encounter with this. I checked her in and left one of her legs with the jaw bone. Not much deer movement last week, mostly in morning.
Just hunted 6 straight days. Saw one buck and no doe. It's like rut just stopped. No new signs. Usually deer chasing hard this time of year. Weather horrible all week. High 73 all week. Really frustrated. Can't believe weather would make that impact. I spent 3 days all day in stand, didn't see a deer. Even wearing scent lock, so you know I was hot. Anybody hunting this area? My buddy killed 8 point last Saturday. So they are moving some.
Anyone seeing deer chasing in Leaf River. Buddies telling me they seeing a lot of scrapes. Peak rut isn't expected till Mid/Late January.
Hunted all last week and only found a few small scrapes. Anyone seeing doe chasing in southeast Perry County?
I've read that years with low acorn production will also cause fewer scrapes? I found acorn production was lower this year than last. So, is it too early in the rut to see a lot of scrapes, or have they started already and there are just going to be fewer scrapes?
Full moon is this week January 19th. I plan to hunt all that week. Hope they start chasing.
I missed a buck last year chasing a doe on Feb 5th. Was this the peak rut, or was he chasing a doe that didn't get bred during the middle of the month?
Last week Leaf river had 111 deer checked in, 95 were does. I hope this helps us, makes the bucks have to move around a little more to find does.
Good luck to all on last week of season.
